Saint Nicholas of Myra was a 4th century Greek Orthodox Bishop! He is the patron saint of Sailors, Widows/Children and of PAWNBROKING . Saint Nicholas is well known for his generosity, especially towards the poor. According to Orthodox Christian tradition , a poor man living in Myra had three daughters but was not able to afford an adeq
Saint Nicholas of Myra was a 4th century Greek Orthodox Bishop! He is the patron saint of Sailors, Widows/Children and of PAWNBROKING . Saint Nicholas is well known for his generosity, especially towards the poor. According to Orthodox Christian tradition , a poor man living in Myra had three daughters but was not able to afford an adequate dowry for them to be married. So they would not be able to get husbands and have an extremely hard life . Saint Nicholas dropped 3 socks/bags filled with gold coins into the daughter’s window! This gave the 3 girls the much needed dowry . Those three socks/bags of gold became a symbol used outside a Pawn Shop ! The original symbol was three coins, then changed to 3 gold spheres that is used by pawnbrokers on their store fronts even today. Saint Nicholas day is December 6th which is also is National Pawnbrokers Day !
